Many of us go through life fighting who we are, trying to fit in with the ‘ways of the world’… but at some point—we finally accept who we are and then begin to go about our real business. I have spent the bulk of my years on this planet following opportunity and adventure. When I do decide to ‘settle down’, I get the worst itch in the worst way. I wrote this originally as an email and sent it out to my friends and fellow world travelers to get feedback about how they felt and generate some ideas for this site. I had such an overwhelming response that I wanted to keep it alive…. So, that said:
IS THIS YOU??
- The idea of putting everything into storage for a year and buying an around the world ticket excites you.
- Cubicles make you itch.
- You like to become part of a community, but after a certain amount of time, you crave more adventure and want to move on.
- The most comfortable seat is on an airplane. (A-F, you don’t care.)
- You hate alarm clocks.
- Between adventures, you feel a bit lost.
- Nine to five feels like prison.
- You gave up wearing a watch.
- You measure things in terms of airplane tickets (mortgage/rent is an overseas trip; your car payment is a domestic flight…)
- As much as you want to fit into society, you don’t. The car, house, job & Jones’ are a concept you keep trying on and it doesn’t fit.
- You like to work but have had a hard time finding something that allows you the security of a paycheck and gives you the freedom you need to travel.
- Your resume looks like a roadmap. In most cases you leave things off and try to cover travel gaps creatively.
- You love to learn, explore, and adventure.
- Getting things dry cleaned kind of freaks you out.
- You have had so many mailing addresses over the years that your family now just calls before mailing anything.
- Your doctors, dentists and medical records are world-wide and you don’t know any of their names by heart.
- You have a love/hate relationship with travel. You love to travel, but hate running out of money.
- The “Oh, no! I’m out of money; now I have to go and get a Real Job” has haunted you for life.
- You are entrepreneurial and you have the ability, as the Italians say, to make something out of nothing.
- If you could have work that you loved, the freedom to travel and an income that wouldn’t stop, your life would be perfect.
