“Life is too Short so Love the one you GOT.” –Sublime

Living like a Rock Star to me, means making your life one of fun, inspiration and personal freedom.

What is personal freedom?

My life now….

  • I live in paradise.
  • I wake up when I want, without an alarm.
  • I start my day with exercise, reading spiritual books and listening to fun dance music.
  • My days are spent reading, writing, contemplating life.
  • I get a wonderful beachside massage about every week.
  • I have the ability to live anywhere and travel freely.
  • I meet up with international friends to eat wonderful food, play cards or games, go dancing and drink a couple of beers.
  • I have fantastic friends that come and visit me to enjoy this little slice of paradise in a far off land.
  • When I need some adventure, I can easily travel to a big city and enjoy art, events and dancing.
  • I am relaxed, calm and eternally grateful for every moment in my entire life.
  • I am not worried about my future; I know it can only go UP from here.
  • I am content.
  • I am happy.

And What About Work?

  • I ‘work’ by helping amazing people become their true selves and actualize their goals.
  • I love to write and inspire people and get to do that several days a week.
  • I spend time online connecting with other inspirational digital nomads, location independent workers and people that are living unconventional lives.
  • I help my clients produce information that they can share with the world to make it a better place.
  • I assist in charity events and participate in giving to less fortunate children in the area.
  • I am a guest speaker for business interviews and classes to show others how to lead a nontraditional life.

How Did All This Happen & How Can You Harness Your Dream?

Step 1:  Realize that YOUR DREAM IS POSSIBLE

I am an eternal optimist.  It has been said, “What you believe, you can achieve.” This is more powerful than ANY OTHER THOUGHT you have ever had.  But sometimes it takes crisis for us to change.

In September of 2008 the housing market crashed in Sacramento where I was living.  Part of my business dropped off and then in October when the business market hit a major downturn, I knew things were heading south.  I lost about 70% of my business almost overnight.  I was renting a room and office from two wonderful friends and after a long-term relationship break up and a ‘failing business’ I was feeling lost, confused and scared.  I knew I needed to do an overhaul of my life and refocus my priorities.  In my past relationship, we had made plans to retire in Thailand.  This was a ten year out goal and I had no real reason to believe that I could make it happen (by myself) and at that time.  With pending payments I knew I wouldn’t be able to meet, something needed to happen.

I spent a good deal of time praying and trying to sort out my options.

What came to me through a series of dreams, synchronistic meetings and divine intervention.  I knew I needed to go to Thailand.  But how was I going to do this?  Was this just a fanciful trip to avoid responsibility?  Could I actually work from somewhere as remote as Thailand?  The answer came to me in a book that I consult daily.  It is the I Ching, or Book of Answers.  There are 64 different possible answers in this book and this is what I opened to at my moment of crisis, it said, “Retreat.  The situation here is unfavorable.  Take your assets and go now.”

I knew at that moment, without a doubt that I was to go.  I had distant dreams of setting my business up to Go Global, but I had no idea that it would be NOW.

In that instant I realized my dream was possible, everything in my life lined up in perfect order to fulfill this vision.

Sometimes the Crisis is just a wake up call for us to understand that it is time to make a change and expand our vision of who we really are. By expanding that vision, we can realize that these distant dreams Can Become a New Reality.  My challenge to you is to encourage you to determine what you really want.  You may have some distant goal that seems unreachable, but you can determine RIGHT NOW that it IS POSSIBLE.

What is your distant dream?  Where have you always fantasized about living?  What have you always wanted to do at some point in your life?

Step 2: Begin to TAKE ACTION as if Your Dream Was Going To Happen

We tend to hesitate until we have a full plan.  But, the reality is that once we begin to move forward by taking action, the plan reveals itself. Just Thinking About It will get you nowhere.  You need to actually move towards your dream as if it was going to happen.  Moving forward helps you to create momentum which in turn, opens doors and opportunities.  Here are some steps to get you on your way to your Rock Star Lifestyle:

  1. Start Talking About It:  Mine your resources.  Talk about what you want to do and ask others around you to help you with contacts, ideas and support.
  2. Begin Researching Your Idea:  This is FREE.  You can begin by looking online, following up with other people that are doing what you want to do and focusing on your goal.
  3. Trust Your Intuition:  You will naturally be drawn to other people and opportunities.  Trust your feelings about the people you meet and spend more time with people supportive of your mission.
  4. Help Others That Are Helping You:  You may not have the financial resources to obtain what you want just yet; but you DO have skills that you can share with others.  Consider helping others as a way to show your support, dedication and appreciation for those that are assisting you.
  5. Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough:  Don’t stop moving towards your goal until you have achieved it.  This takes Patience, Endurance and Unflagging Faith in yourself and your dream.
  6. Make Your Mission Something That Changes the World:  Yes, it is nice to have an amazing personal dream, but having an incredible Personal Mission is even better.  When we help others, our goals are assisted by the Universe and our lifetime can be something of substance and gratification.

Final Thoughts:

My life has changed more in the past six months than it ever has.  Change can feel dramatic, frightening, exciting and fun.  Make the move from Paralysis to Paradise.  You can take the reigns in this crazy ride, or you can be miserably drug along.  The choice is up to you.  The challenge exists in taking Real Action, not in just pondering.  Is it scary?  Yes.  Is life unpredictable?  Absolutely.  But here is the thing.  This is YOUR LIFE.  You might as well make it Remarkable.  Make it Wild.  Accept the Unpredictable Experience.  Embrace the Crazy.  Join the Rock Star Revolution.

If your life wasn’t Crazy, you’d be Bored Stiff!

    Great inspiration Brooke!

Far too many people do not understand the “good life” is indeed possible, and it is possible NOW!

  2. Greg Rollett Says:

Great post Brooke. It is always great to learn about people’s past and how they overcame obstacles and circumstances to get where they are today. You took a big leap and it payed off!

Plus you know I love those that live like Rock Stars.

    Great post Brooke!

“the reality is that once we begin to move forward by taking action, the plan reveals itself.” Spot on. Most people don’t seem to realize this. Instead of constant planning and analysis paralysis just taking small actions and moving forward is huge.

That’s awesome. Love the site and hearing about your experiences. Got word of you through Cody (TH).
Anyways, I came from Sac too. I moved to AZ worked a comfortable cube job (aka 9-5) and quickly realized that wasn’t going to be my life. So I left for Aussie. Went to Hawaii for a few weeks first then to Sydney and then on to New Zealand and back to Aussie. By going there I realized what I really wanted from life.

Now back in the States, I plan on trying to make a career for myself where I am my own boss. The long hours won’t kill me knowing I am doing what is best for me.

Anyways, hopefully I get my blog a renewed life soon (http://lifeexcursion.com) and start a successful vlog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IwXUxXmOAo)

Hope to hear more from you and I plan on trying to write a little blog about your site to spread the word about such a successful person.

    G’day—
    Dave

For a second there, I thought you were describing MY life. It’s pretty similar, minus the beachside massage and waking up whenever I want (my six year old is an energetic alarm clock).I love your tips for getting your ideal lifestyle going. Even if you don’t achieve it all at once, you can get closer to where you want to be and thus be happier.

    Awesome Post!

Thank you for the inspiration. yes, you are right. When we take the first step, the next one is revealed. The journey is made one step at a time. I know I need to listen and follow my intuition more that I have been. Surrender to the inner voice and it will get you where you want to go. It’s definitely an inside job.

I agree with Karol that small steps in the right direction are key. When we started a life of “voluntary simplicity” 3 years ago it was to reclaim some space in our lives (literally and figuratively). Our social life expanded to fill the void from material things, and that is a more than fair trade.

What I didn’t expect from that change, though, was how easy it became to make other changes that eventually led us to where we are now: planning for a year or more of travel around the world beginning next year. Three years ago I would have never thought this would happen before retirement (I’m 38).

Taking the small steps toward a life that you want will bring you that life (and more) faster than you can imagine. I’m living proof!

    Oh Brooke…
As you were describing your life here, vivid memories of our many talks & visits came to mind. Knowing where you were, and getting to live vicariously through social media, where you are now… brought tears to my eyes. I sat here reading your post literally crying because I can’t tell you how proud and amazed I am by you.

As your friend, I am soooo happy you’ve found your smile and feel as though you’ve “hit the life lottery!” :) And as a business person, I honor and revere the courage you have to live a life & business by YOUR design, and huge respect for you for teaching others how to do it too.

I love and adore you and am feeling more and more that I need to plan a trip to Thailand w/ the hubby. …One way ticket perhaps? ;)

I started my journey in 1999, when I realized that due to unexpected circumstances I’d have no retirement and be bound to work at something for the rest of my life. The question then was — how do I manage to live well on nearly nothing. Full-time RVing was the denizen of a mere handful of people at the time. I’d never been in an RV in my life. But someone suggested it and I knew it fit the “nomad” in me — my mother had always called me her “gypsy child” and I’ve always had “itchy feet.” After 30+ years of working in the legal field and fitting journalism around the edges, I was fed up with 2 week vacation limitations (and returning to desks piled high with work nobody did in my absence) and being a Night Owl compelled to work in a Morning Person’s world. Two years ago life the bottom fell out of my life. I had to quickly scramble to put things together, but I did and I don’t think I will every regret it.

Now I do what many wish they could do. And I truly DO enjoy the life of a rock star. I sleep til I wake on my own; my dogs and bird bring me joy and encourage me to interact with folks I might never talk to otherwise. I love to cook, read, explore and experience. If I don’t like a neighbor, I can move. And, finally, I’ve gotten back to what’s important in my life: I write, I take photographs, and I play with my beads (make jewelry).

Many ask how I can do it — some would like to make me feel badly that I no longer have “roots.” Roots are in one’s head. My memories are my roots. But roots can prevent us from growing in the right direction sometimes. I love what I do and I have what I need. What more could one ask for?

  11. Brooke Ferguson Says:

Thanks all, for your Rock Star comments! It is so great to know there are so many others that are out there rocking the universe. I love hearing all of your stories and what brought you to the decision to take life by the reigns and go for it. Cheers!!
