Thanks all, for your Rock Star comments! It is so great to know there are so many others that are out there rocking the universe. I love hearing all of your stories and what brought you to the decision to take life by the reigns and go for it. Cheers!!

I started my journey in 1999, when I realized that due to unexpected circumstances I'd have no retirement and be bound to work at something for the rest of my life. The question then was --- how do I manage to live well on nearly nothing. Full-time RVing was the denizen of a mere handful of people at the time. I'd never been in an RV in my life. But someone suggested it and I knew it fit the "nomad" in me --- my mother had always called me her "gypsy child" and I've always had "itchy feet." After 30+ years of working in the legal field and fitting journalism around the edges, I was fed up with 2 week vacation limitations (and returning to desks piled high with work nobody did in my absence) and being a Night Owl compelled to work in a Morning Person's world. Two years ago life the bottom fell out of my life. I had to quickly scramble to put things together, but I did and I don't think I will every regret it.

Now I do what many wish they could do. And I truly DO enjoy the life of a rock star. I sleep til I wake on my own; my dogs and bird bring me joy and encourage me to interact with folks I might never talk to otherwise. I love to cook, read, explore and experience. If I don't like a neighbor, I can move. And, finally, I've gotten back to what's important in my life: I write, I take photographs, and I play with my beads (make jewelry).

Many ask how I can do it --- some would like to make me feel badly that I no longer have "roots." Roots are in one's head. My memories are my roots. But roots can prevent us from growing in the right direction sometimes. I love what I do and I have what I need. What more could one ask for?

Oh Brooke...
As you were describing your life here, vivid memories of our many talks & visits came to mind. Knowing where you were, and getting to live vicariously through social media, where you are now... brought tears to my eyes. I sat here reading your post literally crying because I can't tell you how proud and amazed I am by you.

As your friend, I am soooo happy you've found your smile and feel as though you've "hit the life lottery!" :) And as a business person, I honor and revere the courage you have to live a life & business by YOUR design, and huge respect for you for teaching others how to do it too.

I love and adore you and am feeling more and more that I need to plan a trip to Thailand w/ the hubby. ...One way ticket perhaps? ;)

xoxo

I agree with Karol that small steps in the right direction are key. When we started a life of "voluntary simplicity" 3 years ago it was to reclaim some space in our lives (literally and figuratively). Our social life expanded to fill the void from material things, and that is a more than fair trade.

What I didn't expect from that change, though, was how easy it became to make other changes that eventually led us to where we are now: planning for a year or more of travel around the world beginning next year. Three years ago I would have never thought this would happen before retirement (I'm 38).

Taking the small steps toward a life that you want will bring you that life (and more) faster than you can imagine. I'm living proof!

Awesome Post!

Thank you for the inspiration. yes, you are right. When we take the first step, the next one is revealed. The journey is made one step at a time. I know I need to listen and follow my intuition more that I have been. Surrender to the inner voice and it will get you where you want to go. It's definitely an inside job.

For a second there, I thought you were describing MY life. It's pretty similar, minus the beachside massage and waking up whenever I want (my six year old is an energetic alarm clock).I love your tips for getting your ideal lifestyle going. Even if you don't achieve it all at once, you can get closer to where you want to be and thus be happier.

That's awesome. Love the site and hearing about your experiences. Got word of you through Cody (TH).
Anyways, I came from Sac too. I moved to AZ worked a comfortable cube job (aka 9-5) and quickly realized that wasn't going to be my life. So I left for Aussie. Went to Hawaii for a few weeks first then to Sydney and then on to New Zealand and back to Aussie. By going there I realized what I really wanted from life.

Now back in the States, I plan on trying to make a career for myself where I am my own boss. The long hours won't kill me knowing I am doing what is best for me.

Anyways, hopefully I get my blog a renewed life soon (http://lifeexcursion.com) and start a successful vlog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IwXUxXmOAo)

Hope to hear more from you and I plan on trying to write a little blog about your site to spread the word about such a successful person.

G'day---

Great post Brooke!

"the reality is that once we begin to move forward by taking action, the plan reveals itself." Spot on. Most people don't seem to realize this. Instead of constant planning and analysis paralysis just taking small actions and moving forward is huge.
